What’s the Best Search Engine Placement?
By Trevor Dumbleton
As a general rule, the best search engine placement is to be as close as possible to the top of the search results. But unless your industry is in the internet equivalent of the back of beyond, that’s easier said than done.
Here are some simple tips to get the best search engine placement possible without breaking the bank:
1. Decide on your target keyword phrases
Sounds obvious but you’d be amazed how many people claim they’re targeting a particular keyword phrase oarea and then don’t bother to actually include it prominently on their pages. Neither internet users or Google are psychic – they need clues to help them understand what your pages are about and including the keyword phrases you’re targeting on the page is a good start.
2. Decide on your budget
Whilst it’s possible to get a good search engine placement for any phrase, the more competitive that phrase the more likely it is that your budget will have to be high. Don’t expect to be well placed for competitive phrases if your budget is limited. But don’t despair either – you’ll just have to carry out the next step instead.
3. Dig deep!
Most keyword research tools are based on the free Google tool. Use this to find out what else people are searching for in your industry and sort the results. By default, the results you’re given are in order of likely relevance to your initial phrase. Sort them so that they are in increasing number of searches and then pick off the lower numbered phrases. You won’t get startling amounts of traffic to your website if you only pick on a handful of these phrases but if you wage a war of attrition on them you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of visitors you can generate to your website.
4. Go broad!
Unless you’re in a super-specific industry, there will be a range of possible phrases that people will use. You can leverage these to get the best search engine placement for these phrases, not just the ones that spring to mind immediately. If you’re not sure what these phrases are, just type in your main search phrase and then activate Google’s Wonder Wheel to see where things lead. Weave these new phrases into your website or create new pages around them and you’ll start to pick up extra visitors that may have been ignored by you previously.
5. Keep at it!
Most people stop hunting for the best search engine placement way too soon. This isn’t a short term fix unless you’re prepared to pay a lot of money for people to click through to your website. Do something towards helping your site in the search engine results on a regular basis. Ideally every day but certainly on a frequent basis. You’ll be rewarded over time with extra visitors to your website even if initially your gut reaction is that it’s all a waste of time. Just be patient and keep working at it and you’ll begin to see better results in your search engine placement.
